One Night of Sin (Knight Miscellany, #6) - Gaelen Foley 3.5-4 starsI have mixed feelings about this book: Alec tackles his gambling habit by.... (wait for it)... GAMBLING! Huh? OK, I get that what he's gambling for is not about himself; it's about honor, love, and justice. Yet, somehow that doesn't sit quite right with me.Becky Ward is our plucky Heroine, and I have to admit that I might like Becky best of all the heroines of this series. I admire all of them, but Becky's way of standing up for herself and her going toe-to-toe with Alec and yet still being yielding and loving... that's some heroine! The stuff with the evil Russian cousin is a bit over-the-top at times, although it's true that in this time period, the English were enamored of the Russians. So I suppose having his own army of Cossacks around might not be as conspicuous as it seems? Dunno. Seems like Mikhail got away with an awful lot, even for a Russian prince. The mystery of who the man is that Becky feels responsible for being killed - the man that caused her to run away and seek out the Duke of Westfield - that part of the mystery was very muddled. Even when it was all revealed, I'd lost track of who was who and what was what. It was almost anti-climactic. And the way that the author 'resolves' Alec's relationship with his rich baroness was unsettling. Yes, it seems as if she'd behave that way, especially to get back at Alec. But... all convenient and, again, a bit over-the-top.What I love about Alec's story is the interaction between Becky and Alec. There are a lot of layers for both that need to be revealed, so that they can each heal; but for the most part, these two are honest with one another - they allow themselves to be in love without worrying over-much about Society's views, which is refreshing. And it was interesting to get Alec's "take" on what's already happened in previous stories, especially Lizzie's story. On to Jack's story....
