Into the Hollow (Experiment in Terror #6)

Into the Hollow - Karina Halle 4.5+ starsThis book is a complete change of pace for Perry and Dex from where we've journeyed with them, so far. I'd recommend reading the novella [b:And With Madness Comes The Light|16159713|And With Madness Comes the Light (Experiment in Terror, #6.5)|Karina Halle|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1353356460s/16159713.jpg|22000642] first. I found it helpful. (That book is from Dex's POV and it's post-breakup with Perry. It takes us through the end of [b:On Demon's Wings|13442031|On Demon Wings (Experiment in Terror, #5)|Karina Halle|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1331704748s/13442031.jpg|18949847], but it gives us so much more insight into Dex and the events leading up to this book. Yes, that book was published after this one, but it's worth reading first. Trust me.}ANYWAY... Dex and Perry are trying to make a go of it... together. Perry is now aware of Pippa's story from [b:Old Blood|13599714|Old Blood (Experiment in Terror, #5.5)|Karina Halle|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1335551656s/13599714.jpg|19191362], although I'm not quite sure how. Maybe she's just aware of what she learned from Pippa in The Thin Veil, during her exorcism in On Demon's Wings. Regardless, Perry knows that she's got to get OUT of her family home, away from her parents and Max. Perry doesn't trust her mother, especially, knowing that it was Ingrid who put Pippa away in the mental institution. So Perry feels as if her choices are either 1) move in with Max, or 2) move in with Dex. Max is on her black list right now for SO MANY reasons, and rightfully so. It's impossible to know what Max's agenda is, even now. So Perry goes with Dex to Seattle, moving into the same small apartment that she visited before Christmas. The biggest change is that Jenn is gone; Dex and Jenn broke off their relationship. Jenn's now living with her cameraman, Brad, and she took 1/2 the furniture and art. Fat Rabbit, the French bulldog, is now in Dex's permanent custody. But Dex is majorly changed - and if you read "And With Madness Comes The Light", you'll know how and why!!! But he's quit smoking, started buffing up by running and going to the gym, and attempting to eat healthy. Dex has also accepted that he's in love with Perry; and in his own quiet way, he's trying not only to win her back, but to show her how he feels. Not easy when he's living in a small place with Perry, who's determined to be completely hands-off in a roomies-only relationship. In fact, Perry starts making "rules" the minute she hits the door. Dex is determined to break down those walls and throw out all the rules. In the meantime, Jimmy from Shownet has convinced Perry to come back to work with Dex on The Experiment in Terror. The caveat is that DEX is now the on-camera talent with Perry operating the camera. Perry decides it's OK, because she's not on-camera and because they're going into to Canada to film an episode about Big Foot. Yup, an outfit that provides guides, maps, llamas, and equipment to hunters and the like claims to have spotted Big Foot near its cabins. In fact, the teenaged daughter of the owner claims to have been clawed up by the monster, while she was trying to escape it.Since there's no such thing as Big Foot ans since it doesn't involve ghosts or demons, Perry thinks she's capable of handling this assignment. Besides, she needs money if she's ever going to move out of Dex's place and get her own.Dex is very protective of Perry; not that he's not been in the past, but the gentler, kinder Dex is showing through in spades. He gives her the choice to go or stay many, many times. Perry always chooses to forge ahead, trying to overcome her fears of herself, Dex, ghosts, and the unknown. Many creepy and spooky things happen during this trip... especially the creepy Mitch, who has a habit of calling Perry "girlie" and staring at her like his last meal. She doesn't know if he wants to rape her or eat her. There were a few stretches of this book that seemed... long and at times, uninteresting. But the author does her best to set the scene for us, especially when Perry and Dex are trekking through the great outdoors. Maps, walkie-talkies, cabins, flashlights, spitting llamas, kind llamas, snow storms, strange noises, stranger prints from the "Beast", dying animals, and being in the literal middle of nowhere take up our time. Then there's the whole terrifying dying llamas and dealing with psycho Mitch, not to mention running for days from SOMETHING...Yup - scary and satisfying in many ways. It's just tough to wait for the next story to see how this fragile relationship that Perry and Dex have is going to pan out. See, in the midst of all of these terrifying events, Perry finally admits to herself and to Dex that she loves him. Dex has already told her that he loves her, in tender words and hot sex...
